Ampicillin comes from the penicillin group of drugs to help fight bacteria in the body.

It works by killing the bad bacteria in the body by interfering with the formation of the bacteria's cell wall whilst it grows. Ampicillin weakens and then ruptures the cell wall, in turn killing the bad bacteria in the body and making you feel better. Ampicillin is only used for working against bacterial infections. It will not treat viral infections like the common cold.

Ampicillin can be used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including, ear infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, stomach ulcers, bladder infections, E. Coli and salmonella infections.

Common Side Effects of Ampicillin

• nausea, vomiting, stomach pain;
• vaginal itching or discharge;
• headache;
• swollen, black, or "hairy" tongue; or
• thrush (white patches or inside your mouth or throat).
