Infections are caused by bacteria forming in the body, which can make a person feel very sick.
Antibiotics help fight infections by poisoning the bacteria in the body, either by killing the bacteria outright or by inhibiting the development of bacteria cells, stopping the cells from reproducing, whilst not harming human healthy cells.
Antibiotics are classed by how they work or by which bacterial infection they are most effective to treat. There are multiple different antibiotics on the market that all are designed to help fight different infections ranging from ear and tooth infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, stomach ulcers and more.
NOTE: Antibiotics only fight infections caused by bacteria. They are ineffective against infections caused by viruses or fungi.
One type of antibiotics are called broad-spectrum because they can be used to kill or impair numerous types of bacteria. Other types of antibiotics are known as narrow-spectrum because they only have uses against a few specific types of bacteria.
Most common infections are relatively easy to treat with a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Other more antibiotic resistant bacteria may require a narrow-spectrum treatment.
Not all bacteria is bad though. Humans also carry many types of beneficial bacteria in our body. Broad-spectrum antibiotics are designed to leave human cells alone, but do tend to have an effect on the good bacteria we carry. This can result in some complications from taking antibiotics.
